The Curse of the Crimson Tide

Long before roads cut through the hills and ships learned the coast by name, the dead did not wander here.

A law kept them beneath the waves.

They called it the Charter of Salt and Bone.

Coins were placed with the drowned, names whispered over their bodies, and the dead were left where the sea claimed them. When the Charter was honored, their spirits remained below—and the water stayed quiet.

Mirelle, keeper of the Charter, watched over the boundary between the living and the drowned. In her possession was the Bone Wake Staff, fashioned from the bones of the dead and carved with symbols that kept restless spirits below and the treasures of countless wrecks sealed away.

Then came Captain Thorne.

Thorne's ship shattered against the cliffs west of Point Conception, dragging him beneath the Pacific. As he drowned, the sea showed him its secrets: shipwrecks piled like graves, gold buried among bones, crowns hammered into skulls—and the power of Mirelle's Bone Wake Staff.

Mirelle held back the tide long enough for Thorne to return from the depths.

But instead of fearing what he had seen, Thorne wanted it.

He returned to the coves with hooks and crowbars. He tore coins from the dead, dragged bones from their resting places, stole treasure from the wrecks, and released spirits that had been sealed beneath the waves.

Then he committed the ultimate betrayal.

He stole the Bone Wake Staff.

The Charter was broken.

The sea answered.

Ships shattered. The drowned rose. Bodies returned from the depths twisted into things that should never have walked again.

Eventually, the sea reclaimed the Staff—and collected its debt from Captain Thorne.

Legend says Thorne still exists beneath the waves, neither living nor dead, trapped forever inside the wreck of his ship. His spine is fused to stone, coral grows through his jaw, and treasure has melted into his ribs.

His mouth remains open, forever trying to draw a breath that will never come.

Now Mirelle guards the boundary once more. But the Charter has never fully recovered.

And those who enter the wreck are weighed just as Thorne was.

Those who remember the Charter are released.

Those who do not are kept.

For the sea is not cruel.

It is exact.

And it never forgets what it is owed.
